Migrant Forum in Asia, as a regional network of migrant organizations protecting and promoting the rights of migrant workers and their families in Asia, has been supporting the struggle of the Seoul-Gyeonggi-Incheon Migrants’ Trade Union (MTU) in Korea. MTU is an affiliate of the KCTU which was formed on April 24, 2005. The MTU, which is in fact a merger of several migrant workers unions and groups in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon, is an effort by migrant workers in South Korea to organize and fight for their rights.

Since 2005, the South Korean government refused to recognize the MTU and has been conducting arrest and deportation of the MTU leadership.

Recently, immediately a day after Labour Day, MFA is alarmed to hear that the South Korean government attacked MTU once again. Below you will find information regarding the separate arrests of MTU’s newly elected President Torna Limbu and Vice-President Abdus Sabur.

MFA continues to support MTU in its struggle against the repressive South Korean government. We stand in solidarity with MTU and KCTU in their demands to
Stop the repression against MTU and release President Torna Limbu and Vice President Abdus Sabur immediately!
In the name of the right to freedom of association of all workers, recognize MTU’s legal union status!
Stop the crackdown against legalize all undocumented migrant workers!
MFA calls for your solidarity to:

Organize a solidarity protest in front of the South Korean embassy or consulate in your area.
Send a protest letter in your organization’s name to the South Korean Ministry of Justice and Commissioner of Korea Immigration Service. (See the example letter below, please send to all the fax numbers given)
Encourage your members and networks to sign the online petition at this link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/StopMigrantRepression/
Please send a copy of protest letter and a word of any actions you take and pictures if possible. inter@kctu.org , mtuintl@jinbo.net
