COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS
NEWS RELEASE
12 JUNE 2008

CHR CONDUCTS FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATIONS ON THE RCBC TANAUAN KILLINGS

The Commission on Human Rights Composite Team (CHR) today proceeds anew to Tanauan, Batangas to complete its Final Investigation Report.

According to CHR Chairperson Leila M. De Lima, the CHR Team is expected to wrap up its final report within next week and submit it to the Commission. The outcome of the Follow-up Investigation will determine whether there will be a need for a Public Inquiry by the Commission. The Public Inquiry will be held at the CHR Central Office.

The CHR Team is also coordinating with other agencies handling the investigation of the RCBC-Tanauan incidents.

Part of the mission of the Team is to go to Saint Cabrini Hospital in Sto. Tomas, Batangas where Police Officer Reynaldo Salazar is hospitalized. Salazar is the lone police officer who was injured during the alleged first encounter of the RCBC Task Force with suspected member of the dreaded RCBC syndicate who robbed/killed nine (9) bank employees in Cabuyao, Laguna.

During its Initial Report, the CHR ruled out the angle of a shootout and called the incident a rubout. Families of the three suspected members of the RCBC robbery/murder incident cried foul as they insisted that it was a case of a summary execution. The CHR remains steadfast that the focus of its investigation is the human rights aspect of the incidents.

Chairperson De Lima assured the public for an early resolution of the case.
