consultation-workshop on Privacy Rights. Empty
PostSubject: consultation-workshop on Privacy Rights.   consultation-workshop on Privacy Rights. EmptyTue Jun 17, 2008 4:12 pm

We are all aware of how information and communications technologies (ICTs)
are transforming many aspects of modern societies, while introducing new
challenges to how people interact, work and live.

"Communication Rights" is an area wherein emergent technologies and
shifting legal frameworks are evolving both opportunities and threats for
citizens and communities in a post-9/11 world. One aspect of these
communication rights which has come to greater focus in "information
societies" is the privacy and information security.

As policy frameworks in the Philippines and in Asia are currently being
developed in the areas of data privacy, state access to personal
information, cybercrime/cybersecurity, and freedom of information, the
Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) seeks to locate a public interest
perspective that will protect citizens and communities from increasingly
problematic surveillance societies.

In partnership with Privacy International (PI) and the London School of
Economics and Political Science (LSE), FMA is organizing an orientation
workshop and policy dialogue on these issues, to be held on Friday 20 June
(8:30 am to 5:30 pm) and Saturday 21 June (9am to 12 pm) at Cravings
Restaurant along Katipunan Road, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

Privacy International is the leading global advocacy group for privacy
rights, and in cooperation with LSE is conducting an exploratory study on
the policy environment of selected countries in Asia in the area of
privacy and technology. They are looking at the Philippines as a key area
in the region for study and collaboration.

We have asked Gus Hosein, David Banisar, and Simon Davies of PI and LSE
(see background note attached) to meet with key Philippine civil society
organizations and other stakeholders in communication and human rights to
share their knowledge, experience, and technical expertise, and to
dialogue with us in crafting a public interest agenda for the Philippines
in the area of privacy rights.

Aware of your interest in these issues, we would like to invite you to
join us in this activity, probably the first one for the Philippine CSO
community. Slots are limited, so we need to know if you or your
representative can attend.

For confirmation please contact FMA at Tel (632) 435-6684 (look for
Lilian) or email <ljmarfil AT fma DOT ph>, copied to <info AT fma DOT ph.

We are looking forward to your response, and active participation.

Many thanks.

ALAN ALEGRE
Executive Director
