EXPLORING REGIONAL ENGAGEMENTS AND RESPONSES:
WORKSHOP ON THE ASEAN
September 25, 2009, 9:00am -5:15 pm

Labor Migration Forum-Caucus
Co-Anchored by CMA and MFA
September 24, 2009, 9:00am 1:00pm
Balay Kalinaw, UP Diliman, Quezon City

Co-organized by: Center for Migrant Advocacy, EU-ASEAN Network-Philippines, Focus on the Global South, Initiatives for International Dialogue, Migrant Forum Asia, Southeast Asia Committee on Advocacy

Background
The growing need to explore regional level responses has prompted many civil society organizations to engage regional bodies. Even as more and more groups step into this arena, many other movements and organizations, already doing regional work in their respective areas of concern, have yet to fully maximize the spaces opening up in the region, particularly the ASEAN.
This workshop seeks to contribute toward deepening understanding and appreciation of the ASEAN as another possible arena for civil society engagement. It intends to bring together movements and groups in the Philippines working on key advocacies, such as trade, peace, security and human rights, migration, and culture, with these themes serving as entry points for discussion. Anchoring discussions and inputs on on-the-ground experiences of participants is an attempt to underscore possible openings for advancing existing work, while stressing the relevance of the ASEAN in the day-to-day realities of their struggles. This activity builds on previous work on civil society engagement in the ASEAN carried out by various groups including the organizers of these 2-day workshops.
