New Zealand, where over 27,000 Filipinos reside, was rated as the world's friendliest country, based on the HSBC bank's global "Expat Explorer Survey."

On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates, with over 600,000 Filipinos, was rated as the least friendly country for expats while Saudi Arabia, with over one million Filipino residents, was ranked as the most challenging.

According to a Forbes article earlier this month, countries were ranked based on four categories:
(1) Easy to befriend locals
(2) Learn the local language
(3) Integrate to local community, and
(4) Fit into the new culture.

In the survey, the Philippines was ranked as the world's 8th friendliest country.

Forbes listed the top 15 friendliest nations based on HSBC's survey released in December last year.

1. New Zealand (27,139)

2. Australia (336,140)

3. South Africa (2,277)

4. Canada (639,686)

5. United States (2,877,666)

12. Italy (119,508)

14. Singapore (163,090)

15. France (50,013)

New Zealand was reported to be the friendliest nation, followed by Australia and South Africa.

HSBC's report revealed that although only 75% of respondents in New Zealand (compared to 77% in Australia, and 79% in South Africa), claimed to integrate well with the local community, it had high scores in all the four categories of the survey.

HSBC's 5th friendliest country for expats — the United States, the top destination for OFWs with 2, 877,666 Filipinos as of December 2009 — is still considered as an ideal place to earn a good income.

Least friendly, most challenging

Forbes said based on its analysis of the HSBC survey, the least friendly country for expats was the United Arab Emirates, where according to POEA some 609,704 reside as of December 2009.
