FIVE hundred poor families in the Municipality of Rizal in Laguna will continue to have health insurance coverage as the Local Government Unit (LGU) recently renewed their enrolment into the Sponsored Program of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

A Memorandum of Agreement for the enrollment of these families was recently signed between Rizal Mayor Antonino A. Aurelio and PhilHealth Regional Office IVA Vice-President, Alberto C. Manduriao.

Now on its eighth year of implementation, this move signified the LGU’s continued support and commitment to provide social health insurance coverage to its constituents especially among the poorest of the poor.

Considered one of the poorest municipalities in the Province of Laguna, Rizal is one of the first LGUs to avail of the two-year lock-in for the renewal of its indigent families into the Sponsored Program. The two-year lock-in renewal is part of the Partial Subsidy Scheme initiated by PhilHealth to aid LGUs in providing continued health insurance coverage to poor and low-income families for two consecutive years with a validity period covering January 01, 2012 up to December 31, 2013. A discounted premium rate of P1,800.00 per family was given to the LGU instead of the P2,400.00 premium contribution per family for the two-year lock-in period, thus giving Rizal a chance to save its funds for other projects.

A visit to Rizal’s accredited Rural Health Unit (RHU) was done after the signing ceremony. The RHU is working on its application as a 3-in-1 provider of PhilHealth’s packages for Out-Patient Benefit (OPB), Maternity Care (MCP) and TB DOTS.

Also present during the signing ceremony were Dr. Sam Joseph C. Cirilo, Municipal Health Officer, Caroline Q. Alcantara, Municipal Budget Officer, Magdalena P. Coronado, MSWDO, Eloisa B. Tagbo, PhilHealth San Pablo Service Office Chief and Jeng G. Lee, Social Insurance Officer III.(Luningning G. Lee, SPC SO)
